3D Model
2021
Sundial is my first digital sculpture in ten years and my first 3D model as an artwork.
Its a fusion of imagination and reality, plastic and carbon fiber, sports cars, motorcycles, steel, dirt and stone.
Instead of telling time all of the time-notches in the sundial say the NATO phonetic alphabet, "Alfa, Bravo, Charlie".
The printer is made by "Unknowable Inc" and the motorcycle seat reads "Pure Becoming".
The carbon fiber parts on the back say "Let things happen" "Make things happen" a kind of Tao Te Ching reference.
A lot of my sculptural work mashes up different narratives to avoid direct interpretation.
I needed Sundial to look super futuristic and fast, with all the carbon fiber race car parts like front splitters and rear diffusers, but also ancient and immobile.
Sundial is an existential compass, a cloud of ideas you can use to find your way or map a territory. It's unyielding yet inviting, useless and useful.
