I'm interested in the way that this piece acts as a voice for our "right now" of time, but also a voice for the "long now" of time. Because human extinction through nuclear war or climate collapse may be imminent, it is both a looming event in the current moment as well as a perpetual-scale event, as human extinction would last until the end of time were it to happen.
This sculptural watch references the extinction symbol and was made in October of 2018, shortly after the global environmental movement Extinction Rebellion had launched. Since then, in conjunction with Greta Thunberg's "School Strike for Climate" and other global protests, the voice of human extinction movement has only become louder. This sculpture also features a quote from Enya, "Who can say when the roads meet that love might be in your heart?" The answer to which is: "only time". As well as Douglas Adam's irreverent Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and it's always relevant universal advice, "don't panic".
